For many years, the girl child’s education in Kenya, particularly in rural communities, has faced numerous challenges. From long distances to school and household responsibilities to cultural barriers and early marriages, girls have often found themselves at a disadvantage compared to their male counterparts.

Recognizing this pressing issue, our organization, in partnership with the Embassy of France to Kenya, embarked on a transformative initiative to promote gender equality in education by constructing a modern dormitory block at Ombeyi Secondary School in Kisumu County.

The goal of this project was simple yet powerful—to create a safe and supportive environment that would allow more girls to pursue their education without the daily struggles that hinder their academic progress. Many girls in the community used to walk long distances to school, arriving late, tired, and sometimes missing classes altogether due to household chores and other obligations.

In addition, the burden of unpaid care work, such as fetching water, cooking, and caring for younger siblings, further reduced the time available for study and rest. These barriers contributed to poor performance, absenteeism, and in some cases, school dropouts.

The construction of the girls’ dormitory at Ombeyi Secondary School has changed this narrative. The facility now provides a secure and comfortable living space where girls can stay within the school compound, giving them more time for study, mentorship, and participation in extracurricular activities. By boarding at school, girls are shielded from domestic burdens and unsafe commuting environments, allowing them to focus fully on their academic and personal development.

Since the dormitory’s completion, enrollment and retention rates for girls have risen significantly, and their academic performance has improved remarkably. Teachers and parents alike have observed increased confidence, discipline, and motivation among the students. The dormitory has not only provided a physical structure but also renewed hope and opportunity for many young girls who now see education as a realistic pathway to a better future.

Impact of the Project:

  • Enhanced Girl Child Education: The dormitory has expanded access to education for girls, improved academic outcomes, and contributed to greater gender equality in learning opportunities.

This project stands as a shining example of how strategic partnerships can drive social change. Through collaboration with the Embassy of France to Kenya, our organization continues to champion initiatives that empower girls, promote education for all, and build stronger, more equitable communities across Kisumu County and beyond.
