In 2014, our organization took a bold step toward transforming healthcare access in rural Kisumu County by establishing and registering Ramula Health Center.
At the time, access to affordable and quality health services was a distant dream for many community members. Most residents had to travel long distances to reach medical facilities, often leading to preventable health complications and loss of lives.
The creation of Ramula Health Center marked the beginning of a new era in community healthcare—bringing essential medical services closer to the people who needed them most.
However, despite the establishment of the facility, the community continued to face one of its most pressing health challenges: high infant and maternal mortality rates. The lack of a proper maternity wing meant that expectant mothers were still delivering at home or seeking services far away, exposing both mothers and newborns to life-threatening risks.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our organization sought support from the People of Japan through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). This partnership led to the successful construction of a modern Maternity Wing at Ramula Health Center—an initiative that has since transformed maternal and child health outcomes in the area.

The new maternity facility has provided a safe, hygienic, and fully equipped space where mothers can give birth under skilled supervision. Since its establishment, infant and maternal mortality rates have significantly reduced, and the facility continues to serve hundreds of community members daily with quality healthcare services.
Beyond maternal care, Ramula Health Center now offers a range of essential services, including outpatient care, immunizations, antenatal services, and health education, making it a vital hub for community well-being.
The success of the project has not gone unnoticed. The County Government of Kisumu has since joined hands to expand and strengthen the facility’s operations. Their contributions include the construction of staff houses, a male ward, the sinking of a borehole to ensure a steady water supply, and the opening of an access road to the health center. These improvements have enhanced both service delivery and the overall accessibility of the facility to community members.
Impact of the Project:
- Access to Affordable Healthcare: The community now enjoys consistent access to affordable, quality health services close to home.
- Reduced Mortality Rates: The presence of a maternity wing and improved healthcare infrastructure has significantly reduced infant and maternal mortality in the region.
Through collaboration, dedication, and community-centered action, the story of Ramula Health Center stands as a shining example of how partnerships—both local and international—can drive lasting impact. Today, Ramula Health Center continues to serve as a beacon of hope, resilience, and progress for the people of Kisumu County.
